I’m super thrilled that I will be covering one of the most thrilling young emerging jazz artists on the scene today, tenor saxophonist
Rico Jones who will be performing original music from his upcoming album
Bloodlines at
Zinc Bar located on 82 W 3
rd Street in Greenwich Village on
Tuesday January 21st.
I first wrote about Jones in the September 2023 edition of the
Village View.
Jones will have a lineup of some of the best jazz musicians in the world working with him that night, with Max Light (guitar), Nasheet Waits (drums), and Joe Martin on double bass.
Currently there are two shows — both on Tuesday January 21 (7:00 PM and 9:00 PM). This will be Jones’ only upcoming performance at Zinc Bar. I’ve also included a link where you can purchase tickets at the bottom of this article.
Jones is an emerging jazz artist on the Giant Step Arts label. As an acclaimed saxophonist and composer, he has performed both as a solo artist and sideman with many jazz luminaries, including Sylvia Cuenca, David Kikoski, and the Charles Mingus All-Star Band.
It’s worth noting that two albums on the Giant Step Arts label have received critical acclaim.
You Think This America by Orrin Evans featuring the drummer from Rico’s
Bloodlines album, Nasheet Waits – was ranked Number One in the
New York Times.
Mark Turner’s album
Live at the Village Vanguard was called a modern masterpiece by
Downbeat Magazine. The roster of artists with critically acclaimed albums on the Giant Step Arts label is a testament to Rico’s promising future as a young artist.
“Rico is one of the few original voices emerging. His musicianship and passion has forged an original voice we will joyfully be hearing more from in the future!” – Vincent Herring
Get ready for a visceral infusion of some of the tastiest jazz you will hear from this modern master, manifested with amazing precision through Rico’s unique blend of jazz infused with indigenous Latino heritage and gospel influences, evoking a deep emotional connection to his music.
